Mezcal is still a very unknown spirit to a lot of people, which kind of breaks my heart because it’s one of the most versatile spirits available.
I love the spirit for its ability to add a layer of complexity, smoke, and earthiness to a cocktail. Not to mention it’s good enough to sip on its own. Mezcal Creyente is a type of, well, mezcal. If you’re new to this spirit, allow me to quickly introduce you.
Mezcal is an agave based spirit produced in Mexico. Like Creyente, what makes this spirit so unique is what occurs in the production process. The piñas (agave plant minus the leaves) are smoked in either a pit or stone oven. This introduces the smokey aroma and flavor Mezcal is known for and what makes the spirit so versatile.
I was challenged with creating a signature cocktail with Mezcal Creyente. The challenge was to create a cocktail based on the “ruling element” of my zodiac sign. I’m a scorpio so the ruling element for me is water.
Should I use a soda water? Should I do a salted syrup to represent sea water? How do I represent water when it tastes like nothing, and smells like nothing? I usually find inspiration for ingredients based on the flavor profile, but how does one find inspiration when water tastes like nothing?
I was stumped.
After going away and coming back to it later, a light bulb went on. I stopped trying to match a flavor profile, and started thinking about different food ingredients that are primarily made up of water content.
Celery consists of 95% water, and was a perfect fit for the smooth, smokey flavor of Mezcal Creyente.
In addition, I knew that the opposing element for water is fire so to further play on this I introduced a little heat into the drink by using a chile liqueur.
All ingredients in this cocktail compliment and highlight Mezcal Creyente really well. This cocktail was also perfect for this 110º heat Phoenix is bringing our way.

- 1.5 oz Mezcal Creyente
- 2 oz fresh celery juice
- 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 oz agave nectar
- 1/2 oz chile liqueur
- Pinch of salt
- Cocktail Shaker
- Jigger or liquid measuring glass
- High ball glass
- Build the cocktail: combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake for 10 seconds to chill the cocktail. Double strain the cocktail into a high ball glass over ice.
- Garnish and serve: garnish with a dried chile pepper and serve.
