Spring time is all about being outside. Punch recipes and pre-batched cocktails are perfect for entertaining. I’m a fan of throwing together a mighty fine sangria recipe or a punch…like this gin mezcal grapefruit punch.
When making punch recipes, always use fresh squeezed fruit juice. The grapefruit and lime juice bring a rush of citrus in this drink, but the gin and mezcal together round it out perfectly. If you’re not familiar with mezcal, it’s an agave based spirit characterized by a smokey flavor. This recipe calls for more gin than mezcal, but the smoke really adds a nice layer of complexity to the drink. If you’re not a fan of mezcal then feel free to exclude the mezcal and use all gin.
If you’d like to make this cocktail for yourself then the individual specs are below. Multiply the recipe below by the amount of people you’re looking to serve (or the amount of cocktails you’re looking to serve, say 2 per person). I originally served this gin mezcal grapefruit punch recipe for 12 people, so I multipled the specs below by 12.
- 1.5 oz Gin
- 3/4 oz Mezcal
- 3/4 oz fresh grapefruit juice
- 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
- 1 oz simple syrup
- 1 dash Peychaud’s Bitters
- 1 dash of Angostura Bitters
- Punch Bowl
- Jigger or liquid measuring glass
- Rocks Glass or Wine Glass
Build the punch: Once you figure out how many people you’re looking to serve, measure out the appropriate amount. Combine all ingredients into a a punch bowl. Stir to combine. (I don’t add ice to the punch bowl as I don’t want to over dilute the punch. I figure that will happen when you serve it over ice).
Garnish and serve: Serve the punch into a rocks glass or wine glass over ice. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge and basil leaf. Enjoy!
